Well, howdy there, internet people, it's Bo again.
So today, we are going to talk about Haiti.
We have touched on it before briefly,
but we're going to kind of go over what's occurring,
what is likely to occur,
and answer some of your questions about it.
And just kind of take a look at it
and answer the big question,
which is what should y'all advocate for?
Okay, so starting off, what's happening? If you've seen the headlines, you know there's unrest.
Heavily armed groups are demanding the resignation of the prime minister, Prime Minister Henry.
It is worth noting Henry was not elected. The pressure on the prime minister is coming from
all directions now. Not just the groups that you've seen in the coverage, but from diplomatic groups,
It's coming from everywhere.
Unless this is the very first video that goes out tomorrow, I would be surprised if he is
still the Prime Minister when y'all watch this.
It seems incredibly unlikely that he retains his position.
So what happens then?
My understanding is that a UN-backed force headed up by Kenya will go in to provide security
and aid.
Why aid?
there is a there's a pretty high risk of widespread issues with food. What is the
U.S. doing? They are cutting a check for 30 million in change for aid and I think
they're providing economic assistance to the security force. One of the questions
is should the U.S. put troops there as peacekeepers? No, definitely not. The U.S.
does not have a good track record in this country. If the US goes down there
it will not, it's not going to benefit the people of Haiti. So what should you
advocate for? That the people of Haiti get to choose their next leader. That's
That's a pretty simple ask, right?
It's been a while since they have been able to choose their next leader.
All of those analogies I use when I'm talking about how foreign policy is rather than how
it should be, the international poker game where everybody's cheating, the foreign policy
strip mall, all of that stuff, if you ever wondered whether or not it was really just
about power or maybe there was a little bit about helping people, when you get to the
top and the decisions being made, Haiti could be a textbook.
The thing that everybody should be advocating for is that the people of Haiti get to determine
what happens next.
Not pressured into it from the outside, not somebody just encouraged to take charge, that
are free elections and that they get to pick and by free I mean free not it's a
free election and you get to pick between the three people we like if if
you want to advocate for something that would help them that's that's probably
the best thing to advocate for that they get to determine what happens next
Anyway, it's just a thought, y'all have a good day.
