Well, howdy there, Internet people. It's Beau again. So today we're going to talk about DARPA's Gambit.
DARPA, for those that don't know, it's Research and Development for the military.
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
They look into high-tech stuff that at some point in the future might have some
possible military application. Lots of high-tech stuff. On August 16th they're
having a little get-together in Arlington, Virginia related to a project
called Gambit. The purpose of this is to develop an air-to-ground missile using a
rotating detonation engine, RDE. RDE is like PDE, pulse detonation engine, on
steroids. PDE is something that they've got running. They actually have aircraft
that run on this. The concept itself is like 70 years old. They came up with the
idea but didn't have the technology to make it work. This project, I want to say it's a 36-month window,
the idea is to be able to field something pretty quickly using this
technology. They want to develop a system out of it, a weapons prototype. This would
be to counter near-peers. It would develop an incredibly fast, incredibly
small missile. All of the talk about hypersonic missiles suddenly seems kind
of quaint if they can get this up and running. I want to say, like on a cruise
missile, this would run somewhere between Mach 4 and 6 and should be relatively
maneuverable, be very fuel-efficient, and be very, very small. This is everything
the Navy ever wanted if they can make it work. And we should find out, well we
won't find out, they'll find out sometime in the next 36 months. They'll find out
whether or not this is a workable concept at this point. Given the fact
that there's a little bit of publicity behind this, they probably already have a
general idea of how this is going to function. And they're just calling in
defense industry people to this little get-together to divvy up who's going to
do what and to get it working. Russia and China will be watching this very, very
closely. A lot of their conventional deterrent is based on keeping US forces
away. If you develop something that is much more fuel-efficient, it has a
longer range. So this is one of those projects to watch. If it works, if they
can get it up and running, this will be revolutionary when it comes to, well, air
to ground missiles, but it also has a whole bunch of other applications that
it could be used for. It could eventually be used for aircraft. So just something
to watch. The project name, if you hear it mentioned, is Gambit. Anyway, it's just a
