Well, howdy there, Internet people.
It's Beau again.
So today we are going to talk about Russia's push for a referendum in Ukraine in at least
parts of the areas it controls, kind of.
And we're going to talk about what it means.
We'll talk about the validity of the referendum.
We'll talk about the foreign policy reasons for doing so.
And we will talk about what it says about Russia's belief of its own position.
So Russia is basically setting up a referendum that will ask people in occupied areas, at
least some of them, if they want to kind of join Russia.
Okay, this is a sign that Russia believes it is going to be pushed out of these areas
based on the status quo, based on how things are right now.
They think that the situation is untenable and they're going to be pushed out.
Personally, I don't think they're right.
I think they have gone from overestimating themselves to now underestimating themselves.
But it doesn't matter.
The referendum itself will be in a few areas.
And the idea of them being real kind of falls apart real quick when you realize a lot of
the areas that will be participating in the referendum are on the other side of Ukrainian
lines.
This isn't real.
This is propaganda stunt.
The goal is to have a successful referendum that then they can turn to the Russian people
and use it as propaganda and say, look, they're part of Russia, and then order a full mobilization.
Forcibly draft people, forcibly conscript people, people who know better, and send them
off to the grinder.
That's what they're doing right now.
It's also worth noting that this is officially attempting to take the land.
For those who doubted that this was Russian imperialism, this is your moment to wake up.
They're attempting to seize the land through force of arms.
It's imperialism.
It always has been.
They just framed it nicely.
The referendum will be... the outcome will be predetermined.
It's not real.
You've already seen people in European governments basically say that this changes nothing.
It has no legal consequence.
And that's true at the international poker game where everybody's cheating.
However, domestically in Russia, it gives them a facade of being able to say we're defending
the homeland.
We're defending our dirt and sending off a bunch of kids to go fight.
That's what this is.
The Ukrainian military is still making gains, and I think the speed of the gains has led
Russia to believe that it can't muster a fight against them.
I don't actually think that's true.
I think they overestimated themselves in the beginning and therefore spread themselves
too thin.
If they were to at some point attempt to regroup, they could probably hold on to much of what
they've already taken from a military aspect.
They can hold the dirt.
But after a long string of failures, it seems that Russians themselves, Russian leadership,
doesn't believe that they can do that.
That's really, at this point, that's the only reason to do a move like this, because they
have to know it won't be accepted by anybody, because you can't hold a referendum in areas
that you don't control.
It's a farce.
It is a propaganda stunt designed to allow the leadership of Russia to throw more Russian
lives away is what it boils down to.
Anyway, it's just a thought.
Have a good day.
