Beau provides a scathing overview of the lackluster Republican primary debates, pointing out the absence of substantial policy debate and missed opportunities to challenge Trump, ultimately suggesting that the Democratic Party may be the real winner.

Well, howdy there, internet people, it's Bo again.
So today we are going to talk about the Republican debates,
the presidential primary Republican debates.
As I run through some of what happened,
please keep in mind the context is presidential debates.
I watched it, so you didn't have to.
It was not great.
It was bad.
It was real bad.
Everybody knew it was going to be bad, even Fox.
They cut like ad rates for it ahead of time.
I think everybody knew it was going to be bad.
But even by those incredibly low standards, it was still bad.
I'm just sitting there watching, listening.
Every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber for what you say.
That's not what I was thinking.
That's a quote from the presidential debates because they're very serious people, you know.
That came from Nikki Haley, who, keep that in mind as I say this, if I had to pick one
person that might have gotten something out of this debate and changed the
perception of them a little bit in a favorable way, it would be her. But nobody
got what they needed. Nobody got what they needed. Christie was Christie, you
know, taking swings at Trump, called him Donald Duck. He did say this, this guy
has not only divided our party, he's divided families all over this country,
he's divided friends all over this country, he needs to be voted off the
island and he needs to be taken out of the process. Now I'm sure that a whole
lot of people right off the bat, you want to make fun of him for making a
very timely survivor reference, but that was actually part of the debates. They
They asked them who they would vote off the island.
I'm sure that was the Republican way of showing they were hip and with it.
So you had that.
The governor of Florida took some light swings at Trump about being absent, not being there
to defend his record, that kind of thing.
And then it got weird.
This next part is from Christie.
When you have the President of the United States sleeping with a member of the teachers
union, there is no chance that you could take the stranglehold away from the teachers union
every day.
talking about the First Lady saying this was... I mean that was not something I
expected to hear and you would think that this would be the weirdest thing
said during the presidential debates by very serious people but you would be
wrong. Because not to let an awkward moment, you know, pass without injecting
himself, Pence comes along to say, by way of full disclosure, Chris, you mentioned
the president's situation. My wife isn't a member of the teacher's union, but I've
got to admit, I've been sleeping with a teacher for 38 years. Full disclosure.
Yeah, Pence, that's too much disclosure.
Nobody needed that, okay?
Nobody needed that.
Those were the highlights.
That's what you missed if you didn't watch it.
No substantial policy discussion, nothing.
It was just all bad.
If I had to pick a winner, it would be Democratic strategists because there was one unique thing
that happened.
Generally speaking, since forever, the path to the White House for a Republican, part
of it included talking about how much you don't like reproductive rights.
None of them wanted to talk about that.
They all steered away from that conversation, which is really interesting.
You need to think about all of the money that these campaigns dump into figuring out what
talking points resonate with their audience, with the people they're trying to reach for
the primary.
Reproductive rights is apparently not something that resonates with Republican primary voters.
The Democratic Party needs to be on that.
I would hope that Democratic strategists saw that because that showed a giant weakness
for the entire Republican Party.
Now all of them, again, all of them needed something here.
None of them got it.
None of them got that breakout moment for them and it's getting to be a little late in the
gang. It is getting to be a little late in the gang. If they don't get their
moment soon, it's going to be Trump. It's going to be Trump, which is sad because
when you really think about it, when you look at that field, they had one job and
that was to convince the Republican primary voters that Trump wasn't their
guy. Collectively, that's all they had to do and they couldn't do it. I don't foresee
massive shifts based on this debate. You might see a couple of people decide that
this just isn't going to happen for them and start to drop out, start making those
moves, but nobody got the moment they needed to really be able to challenge Trump.
You will probably still have some stay in, just hoping that the legal entanglements catch
up to him, or hoping that something really bizarre happens.
But this was just, it was not, it was not productive for anybody who was there.
And I don't think that the viewers got much out of it.
I don't think Republican primary voters are going to be swayed much by this.
I mean, I could be wrong.
Maybe, you know, maybe all of that is something that somehow resonated.
But it seems unlikely to me.
It was just bad.
That's the only word for it.
So that's it.
There's nothing really more to it.
The real winner is Democrats if they're paying attention.
Other than that, I think Trump's probably pretty safe based on this performance.
I don't think that it's, it's going to sway much.
I honestly expected this to be the point where they came after him and realistically the
winning route to the White House for a Republican who isn't Trump right now would
be a very centrist's policy and swinging hard at Trump that would be the winning
formula, but I think there's a little bit of reluctance to go after Trump with
any degree of energy, and I think they're concerned that if they go after him and
he still gets the primary, then he's going to retaliate.
I think that's their concern and if it is let's be honest if that's really
what they're worried about they can't be president anyway because they don't
have what it takes to deal with the tough decisions later with the real
stressful stuff. But yeah, if you skipped it, wise decision. Wise decision. If you
watched it, I apologize. Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
