Well, howdy there internet people, it's Beau again.
So today we are going to talk about the United States
and Cuba
and a person named Manuel Rocha.
And
the
the expectations
what we know, what we don't
and where it goes from here.
Okay, so if you have missed the news
The reporting has gone out that the FBI has picked up this person and arrested them for
secretly acting as an agent of Cuba. The person is being described as a former U.S. diplomat which,
I mean, yeah, that's one way to say it. It's true. It's a true statement, but it's a little
understated. He's a former U.S. ambassador. He worked with U.S. diplomatic
efforts for about 25 years, mostly in Central and South America during the
Cold War. At this time U.S. efforts were pretty heavy-handed and Cuba was viewed
as an oppositional nation. So, there's a whole lot of stuff here that is signaling
to the media that this is going to be a big story. And it might. It really might
be. But we don't know that yet. Acting as an agent can mean a whole lot of things.
Not all of it is like spy stuff. It's a lot like espionage. Somebody can be
acting as an agent if they were to call up an old friend at State Department and
ask for help on getting some relief when it comes to Cuba getting medical
supplies or something like that. If that is done at the request of the government
of Cuba and it's not disclosed. It could be something that simple. Don't get me
wrong, that's still illegal, but it may not be what people are picturing. The
other end of this is that, yeah, it's exactly what people are picturing with
those headlines. The odds of it being something in between are pretty slim
because he was involved with U.S. diplomatic efforts for so long, he knows
what the rules are. So this is either going to be a little thing or it's
going to be big. It seems very unlikely that this is anywhere in between those.
It's going to be something that the current reporting, like when the
allegations actually come out in the specifics, it's going to seem like kind
a letdown in the story or it's going to be a big deal. We don't know yet. My understanding
is that his court appearance is today and generally speaking a little bit more information
becomes available at that point but right now for the amount of coverage that is going
on about this, there's not a lot of information. What is actually known, it
can all be in the headline. Pretty much everything else is speculation. The only
thing that I would say is that I would temper your expectations about what it
because it's going to be on one end of the spectrum or the other. It's somebody
who was active with US diplomatic efforts for that long. It seems unlikely
that they're going to make a big mistake that isn't huge. Like, generally
when they cross the line out of something that's kind of minor, they just
jump straight into something that's huge. So we'll have to wait when we find out
more, I'll let y'all know. Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
